Adopt-A-Road-Program
In 1991, the Rockland County Legislature enacted an Adopt-A-Road Program to be implemented by the Rockland County Highway Department, for the purpose of beautifying the roadways and keeping them litter free throughout the County. Since its inception, public spirited volunteer groups, private individuals and organizations have become active in adopting miles of County roads for cleanup and beautification.
The participants agree to remove litter, pick up trash and maintain their adopted segment of roadway on a quarterly basis for two-year period. Signs are posted along the County right-of-way identifying the volunteer group responsible for the maintenance of a stretch of roadway.
It is estimated that the County has saved $850 for each mile of roadway since 1991. To date, 26.80 miles have been adopted by 21 volunteer groups.
With the assistance of the volunteer groups, and also working with Keep Rockland Beautiful, the Rockland County Highway Department is able to give first priority to keeping the highways safe and serviceable for the residents of Rockland County.
