Elder Abuse
Abuse can happen to anyone — no matter the person's age, sex, race, religion, ethnic or cultural background. Each year, many adults over the age of 60 are abused, neglected, or financially exploited. This is called elder abuse. There are many types of abuse. It can be in the form of financial exploitation, physical abuse, emotional abuse, sexual abuse, neglect and abandonment.
Abuse can be unintentional as well. Caregivers can suffer from burnout, stress and anxiety. They may not even realize what they are doing. The Rockland County Office for the Aging offers a Respite Program allowing for a break in the daily routine for both the adult providing assistance to an older person and for the older person him/herself. This is a free caregiver program that pays for a free week-long stay at an assisted living facility or aide services in the home for a specific period of time. This program is available for individuals 60 and older that reside in Rockland County.
Rockland County Office for the Aging recognizes the many challenges and issues that can affect caregivers. There are numerous services that are available. Please go to our Caregiver Services page to learn more.
