The Rockland County Planning & Public Transportation Departments are the County repository for a wide variety of data and information concerning demography. This information base, while essential to staff operations, is also a rich resource for other agencies and the general public. Substantial staff effort is devoted to gathering the data and maintaining the databases, performing research and analysis, and distributing the information.

The Department's Research Unit works closely with State and regional data centers, and with the US Census Bureau on Census-related efforts. Staff also work with County and local government personnel and the general public to assist with data research and by providing resources. The Unit works closely with the US Census Bureau on preparations for each decennial Census and leads efforts such as the Local Update of Census Addresses (LUCA).

Most recently, staff worked with the Rockland County Complete Count Committee to ensure the best possible count for the 2020 Census. Efforts with the Rockland County Complete Count Committee resulted in Rockland having the third highest Census Self-Response rate in the State of New York, surpassing the State average by seven percentage points and the national average by four percentage points.

In 1996 the U.S. Census bureau selected Rockland County as one of only four original sites in the United States for the American Community Survey (ACS). Since then, Rockland County has received annual data for all years since 1996. Rockland County continues to benefit from this program by receiving data on an annual basis, enabling us to have updated data regularly.
