Why is Getting Tested for HIV So Important?
An HIV test is the only way to find out if you have HIV. Nearly 1 in 5 people with HIV don't know they are infected and can pass the virus on to others without knowing it.
- If you find out you are HIV-positive, you can start taking medicine for your HIV. Getting early treatment for HIV improves your health, allows your doctor to monitor all aspects of your health, prolongs your life, and greatly lowers your chance of spreading HIV to others.
- If you are pregnant or planning to get pregnant, knowing your HIV status and getting treatment can help protect your baby from becoming infected.
- If you are at high risk for HIV and test negative, taking pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) along with other prevention methods can lower your risk of acquiring HIV.

What is PrEP?
- PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) is a medication that prevents HIV and promotes sexual health.
- It is for anyone- straight, gay, bisexual, male, female, transgender, or gender non-conforming.
- PrEP is available for people who are HIV negative (not living with HIV). When a person takes PrEP as directed, it is 99% effective at preventing HIV (New York State, 2021).
